Full program notes
The two pieces on this program are pieces by composers that have been dear to me my whole life: Frank Bridge, and Edvard Grieg.
Bridge is a composer less-known today, but whose compositional style is unmistakably individual, immediately compelling, and dramatically complex. Bridge's In Autumn paints the english landscape in a pastel melancholy, with a combination of mistiness and leaf-like delicacy. Grieg is a composer that has stayed with me ever since I owned a copy of his lyric pieces for piano when I was 8 years old. Grieg's "19 Norwegian Folk Tunes" is a masterpiece of a set: an overarching journey through many, many musical landscapes--from bustling towns and townsfolk, to the magnificent and peaceful mountains, forests, and fjords of Norway.
This program will be played without interruption, so as to connect the english and nordic landscapes as one continuous canvas of sound.
Program:
F. Bridge --- In Autumn, H. 162
E. Grieg --- 19 Norwegian Folk Tunes Op. 66
