About

Dynamic and engaging, pianist Francesca Hurst delights audiences with a mix of classical and new music. Listeners have described her playing as “powerful yet sensitive”, and The Washington Post praised her “quicksilver passagework” and “tender lyricism”. At ease with a wide range of repertoire, she makes sense of the music regardless of style and period, loves communicating with audiences, and has a special interest in music by women.

Francesca has been a guest artist at Wintergreen Music Festival, New Music Delaware, New Music Gathering, Charlotte New Music Festival, and the Bang on a Can Music Marathon. Equally versatile in classical repertoire, she has played in venues like the Kennedy Center, the National Gallery of Art, and internationally in Europe. She is on the Virginia Commission for the Arts Performing Artist Touring Roster and is on the piano faculty at CUA and UVA. She has a DMA in Piano Performance, is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, and is fluent in Italian.

Music

Music: classical and contemporary or "new" music

I love creating programs that mix the old and the new, and finding connections between the two.

Composers you might hear me playing: Faina Lushtak, Jennifer Margaret Barker, Caroline Shaw, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Field, Florence Price, Elena Kats-Chernin, Dave Brubeck

I love speaking to audiences about the music I play.
