Program: Francesca Hurst presents "Reflections", a solo recital featuring works by Elena Kats-Chernin, Michael Thomas Foumai, Florence Price, and an exploration of the nocturne from John Field to today.

Recognized for her “tender lyricism” (The Washington Post), yet not afraid to shout, swing her foot onto the piano or don fingerless gloves if the music demands it, pianist Francesca Hurst divides her playing evenly between classical and contemporary music, and has a special interest in women composers. She makes sense of the music regardless of style and period, and is passionate about connecting with audiences. She teaches piano and piano pedagogy at The Catholic University of America and piano at the University of Virginia. Appearances include:
Rappahannock Concert Association
Ward Virts Concert Series
Virginia Tech Concert Artist Series
Davies Concert Series

What's the music?

This program, "Reflections," features music that evokes scenes of evening and night, nature, water, and more.

Featuring nocturnes by Field, Chopin, Debussy, Brubeck, Tann, and Botterill, as well as works by Jennifer Margaret Barker, Elena Kats-Chernin, Michael-Thomas Foumai, and Florence Price.

I love these pieces because they create a world of sound that we can escape to for a while.

Where does this music come from?

As part of this program, I take a look at the origins of the nocturne as the Romantic genre - a piece about the night, with a lyrical right hand melody over an arpeggiated left hand accompaniment. Irish composer John Field invented the genre, and ever since, composers have been creating their own versions.

The other half of the program is music that speaks to me - beautiful and haunting melodies, dreamy looks at the moon, the sounds of water in all its forms in New Zealand, and 6 pieces based on Japanese haiku.
