Program description

Pianist Michael Arnowitt will perform a concert of lively, evocative, and poetic music from the 1700’s up to the present. The centerpiece of the program is “Schumann Scenes,” collecting together eight of the pianist’s personal favorite pieces from different parts of the life of the groundbreaking romantic composer Robert Schumann. The diverse program also features piano music by the great Black American composer George Walker; a piece by the Canadian musician John Kameel Farah, creatively blending the style of the Renaissance composer William Byrd with elements from Middle Eastern musical traditions; Michael Arnowitt’s “The Stream,” based on a selection from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier; spirited music from Haydn’s classical-period masterpiece Sonata in C minor; and Liszt’s exciting Hungarian Rhapsody no. 6.

Michael Arnowitt is known for his extraordinary sense of touch at the piano, for his abilities to take listeners on journeys through imaginative musical landscapes, and for his warm onstage manner with audiences of all ages. Michael Arnowitt has given seven concert tours of Europe, performing in France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. He has given concert tours in Russia and Korea, and is the subject of the documentary film, “Beyond 88 Keys,” filmed in both the USA and Europe, and available on Vimeo.

Michael Arnowitt is currently working on a book of essays about music, “What Makes Great Music Great,” to be published by the Vermont-based Fomite Press.
