Osvaldo Golijov - Mariel (arr. Aaron Wolff)
Paul Wiancko - American Haiku

Viola and cello are rarely paired together in duo, but we're not sure why. One register grows directly out of the other. They have the same strings, one octave apart (A, D, G, C). And we can all do without a violin in the room every once in a while ;)

We're excited to share the music of three living composers who seamlessly blend classical, folk and pop idioms. Shaw's pared down "Limestone and Felt" is equal parts playful and serious. The viola and cello encircle one another, spinning around her trademark open harmonies. Golijov's "Mariel," an elegy originally composed for cello and marimba, finds increased resonance and shadow-play in this new arrangement for double strings. Wiancko's "American Haiku" is a three-part epic that weaves together Appalachian and Japanese folk music. The evening will kick off with keyboard Inventions by the master of two-part writing, JS Bach, as an appetizer to this unique sound-world.

An intimate vibe encased within floor-to-ceiling windows, Alex's loft apartment is the perfect place to make and listen to chamber music. We hope you'll join us!
