Full program notes
Our musical offerings tonight will be in three parts. Nicole Faghihi and Jane Spencer Mills will present an art song cycle by SF composer Jake Heggie called Natural Selection. It traces the life of a woman who leaves her parents' home in search of herself. She isn't sure at the outset what she really wants but by the end of the journey comes to know that what ever it is, she is enough.
Diana Gomez will then join Nicole to present “Sonatine” by Philippe Gaubert, 1879 - 1941. The Sonatine was written during Gaubert’s time as Professor at the Conservatoire de Paris and comprises two movements, the second being a homage to Schumann.
Finally, all three will share two pieces by Kyle Hovatter, Bay Area musician and composer. These two come from a cycle called Four Poems by Vaschel Lindsay written for flute, voice and piano. Lindsay's poetry, written circa 1913, resonates with our current times.
