Full program notes
The Brahms Piano and Clarinet sonata Op.120 No.1 and No.2 were written in 1894 and are dedicated to the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. Brahms composed them very late in his life, when he discovered the beauty of the sound of the clarinet. They were the last chamber pieces which Brahms wrote in the last year of his life, and were considered the two of the greatest works ever composed for piano and clarinet in the history.
