Where does this music come from?
Castillo Interior: Pēteris Vasks is a piece that will transport you like a movie soundtrack, to another place and time. It alternates between a dream world and a more intense moments of contemplations. The title refers to Saint Theresa of Avila's book "Dwellings of the Interior Castle" written in 1577 and was written after the composer spent some time at a house of meditation in an isolated location on the Baltic.
The remainder of the duo program are inspired by dances. The "Danzas Laintoamericanas" by José Elizondo are in three movements: I.Autumn in Buenos Aires, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and Sunset in Guadalajara. This piece was originally written for cello duo - specifically for Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto and Yo-Yo Ma.
In the second half, Sasha will be performing movements from "Renovatio" a piece for solo cello and electronics. Think Rosalía blend of house music/sampling and classical music. This piece was commissioned by a cellist with the brief of re-imagining the Bach Suites.
