London Philharmonic Orchestra
Uniquely ground-breaking and exhilarating to watch and hear, the London Philharmonic Orchestra has been celebrated as one of the worldâs great orchestras since Sir Thomas Beecham founded it in 1932. Its mission is to create unrivalled music experiences and forge human connections with its audiences and communities, both on and off the concert platform, which it accomplishes through live performances, online, and an extensive education and community programme.
With its primary home in Londonâs Southbank Centreâs Royal Festival Hall, it is at the beating heart of Londonâs cultural life. The LPO also has residencies at venues across the UK, and tours internationally, including the USA, with a passionate commitment to fostering transatlantic cultural exchange.
The American Friends of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (AFLPO) was founded in September 1968 as the London Philharmonic Society (U.S.A.) Inc. In 2006, the name was changed to the American Friends of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The AFLPOâs mission is to support the Orchestraâs international touring program, educational projects, and a wide array of musical activities in both London and the United States. Funds raised by the AFLPO help the Orchestra initiate and strengthen existing programs and maintain its high standard of musical excellence. The AFLPO is a 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to supporting the LPOâs education activities, such as the Orchestraâs work with talented young American musicians and the coaching of students from the Fiorello H. La Guardia High School for Music & Art and the Performing Arts. Support of the American Friends of the LPO also enables the Orchestra to commission new works from American composers, collaborate with world-class American artists, share live and digital LPO performances with US audiences, nurture exceptional future American talent, and provide a prestigious platform in the UK on which to showcase and celebrate extraordinary US musicians.
The American Friends of the LPO will play a vital role in the sharing of the unique power of music across that Atlantic over the coming year, by supporting mesmerising performances by Terence Blanchard and Jonathon Heyward, and the showcasing of the work of John Adams and Duke Ellington, at their London home on the Southbank. The AFLPOâs vision and generosity also supports the positions of native New-Yorkers, Karina Canellakis, the LPOâs Principal Guest Conductor, and Alice Ivy-Pemberton, the LPOâs Co-Leader, and will enable LPO chamber performances in New York and Los Angeles later this Autumn, alongside the planning of another US tour in 2027.
Each year, the AFLPO hosts events that aim to enlighten and educate and, as a supporter of the AFLPO, you have an opportunity to engage in these special events, whilst driving lasting social and cultural impact by sustaining the LPOâs special relationship with America and fostering transformative UK/US cultural exchange.
