Where does this music come from?
Entrance of the Gladiators was a military march composed by Czech composer Julius Fucik. Canadian composer Louis-Philippe Laurendeau rearranged the Enrance for a small band and started selling it across North America. It became popular as a screamer march (march played fast) for circuses and is often used to introduce clowns.
We are playing a couple of calliopes. Calliope is a steam-whistle organ with a loud, shrill sound audible miles away used to attract attention for circuses and fairs. It was invented in the US about 1850. Since we're playing with an acrobat, we thought these pieces would be fitting.
I had a friend suggest that Debussy would be awesome to hear with someone performing on the hammock, and I thought it would contrast the other music well for a delightful change of pace to something more contemplative.
We are playing a number of 2-3 minute movements from Francois Couture's Fairground Suite, all which are written for this instrumentation and reflect the spirit of a fair!
