What's the music?

Andreas Arnold

ANDREAS ARNOLD

As an artist in a globalized world, Andreas Arnold expresses himself through a musical kaleidoscope that reflects the classical traditions of his homeland Germany, jazz from the US where he has been living for the last decade, and music from the Mediterranean, in particular the Spanish art form of flamenco. Through this unique fusion, Arnold proves that purity is not defined by any one culture or style but transpires when one finds his voice to express his personal experience in society, art, and life.

While living between New York City and Andalusia, Spain, Arnold has participated in numerous productions as an instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and producer, touring on five continents. On his new album Ojos Cerrados he was accompanied among others by Carles Benavent, legendary and longtime bass player of Paco de Lucia.

Arnold grew up in a family of classical musicians in southern Germany. He fell in love with Paco de Lucia as a teenager but went on to study jazz guitar at the conservatory of Amsterdam and later in NYC with Mike Stern, John Abercrombie and Wayne Krantz before entering a period of complete dedication to the art of flamenco guitar. He is currently the musical director for internationally renowned Jordanian singer Farah Siraj as well as for the New York Flamenco Jazz Project.

GEORGE CROTTY
Canadian cellist George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary, pushing the boundaries of the cello. He has presented his music in the Americas and Europe including at the Museo Nacional de Colombia, Vancouver Jazz Festival, 21C Music Festival, Copenhagen Vinterjazz Festival, and New Directions Cello Festival.

Where does this music come from?

Flamenco, recognized by UNESCO as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (palmas), and finger snapping (pitos).

The artform is commonly believed to have emerged around 250 years ago as the product of a diverse mix of musical traditions in Andalucía, including Jewish, Arab, Castilian, Andalusian, and Gitano influences. Though the Romani, who arrived in Spain in the 15th century, played a central role in shaping flamenco, it wasn’t fully associated with regional singing and dance until the 19th century.

Flamenco gained international recognition at the World’s Fairs in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where Spanish Gypsy performers became highly popular. European avant-garde artists like Sergei Diaghilev and Claude Debussy were drawn to flamenco's raw emotional power, recognizing its authenticity. This newfound acclaim led Spanish intellectuals like Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca to elevate flamenco to the status of high culture.

After Franco’s death in 1975, flamenco’s role in Spanish society shifted, influenced by regional autonomy movements and the rise of world music. Despite commercialization, the artform has also seen serious academic study and renewed artistic respect, reflecting its complex ties to Spanish identity.
