In these times of crisis, when great shocks to our collective system bring down what's brittle and accentuate the eternal truths of love, connection, beauty, and compassion, our best selves might find occasion to rise. Stories of resilience, resourcefulness, and true service are proliferating through our cultural consciousness, reminding us all of what we, too, are capable of.
Project: Music Heals Us, richly profiled in this last Sunday’s New York Times, is one of these stories. For years, they’ve been committed to bringing eternally divine music into corners of society that have been left behind - prisons, homeless shelters, refugee centers. When the pandemic broke, this incredible group of humans heard the call and they immediately started organizing to bring live-streamed classical concerts to the trenches of this brutal warfare - to give the sick, the dying, the terrified, the isolated a portal into the sublime from lonely hospital beds.
And we here at Groupmuse are so blessed to boast that a great many of these artists are members of the extended Groupmuse family - they’ve played Massivemuses, the living room scene, online ‘muses, and on. In fact, cellist Oded Hadar, mentioned in the above article, played the second groupmuse ever, in Somerville MA, over 7 years ago.
And so, this Saturday's Massivemuse is to support and honor PMHU’s heroic and humbling efforts.
On the docket is the "trio in Kentucky” mentioned in the NYT article. Co-director of PMHU and violist Molly Carr, aforementioned cellist Oded Hadar, and pianist Anna Petrova — all musicians of the absolute highest caliber — are beaming in from the Midwest with Brahms, Schumann, Chopin, Gershwin, Mendelssohn, and birth-year boy Beethoven for a sumptuous evening and a life-giving cause.
We’ll start with a Zoom, move on to the music, and afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with the directors of Project Music Heals Us, Molly Carr and Andrew Janss, to hear their astonishing story.
The evening is pay-what-you-want, and the proceeds are split between Groupmuse and Project: Music Heals Us.
We can’t wait to share this inspiring evening with you all, and we’re grateful for the opportunity.
What's the music?
