    For decades, the American Classical Orchestra has been devoted to lovingly presenting music from the classical era (roughly 1750 to 1820) on period instruments — so that we can truly hear Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven as their contemporary audiences might have heard it. The experience truly bolsters the sense that communing with these Giants of Ages Past is in some real way transcending space-time. And next week, we’ll be mind-blown by Beethoven’s very first symphony as those first audiences did, when Ludwig crashed onto the scene as the greatest symphonist of his generation. Yes indeed: We’re heading back to Lincoln Center for another Night Out!

    The evening starts with Felix Mendelssohn’s truly sublime Psalm 42, for choir, orchestra, and soloists, featuring the brilliant young soprano Clara Rottsolk. No less than Robert Schumann saw this work as the pinnacle of Mendelssohn’s music for the church.

    It’s followed by Christoph Willibald Gluck’s motet De Profundis. In Mozart’s day, Gluck was the leading opera composer in Europe (that is until Wolfgang showed up…) and this divine and worshipful masterpiece was Gluck’s last creation. He never even heard it performed. But lucky us, we will.

    The finale is Beethoven’s 1st Symphony, right in time for his 250th birth year. If you’ve never experienced the first chapter of the 9 part symphonic saga that ends with Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, you need to hear Beethoven’s 1st.
